Get Outside and Have Some Fun!
By: Rhonda Mulvey
To kids, the term fitness and anything associated with it sounds pretty boring. But when you start looking at all the fun activities that are considered part of a healthy lifestyle, how could they possibly not want to take part in being fit.
Think back to your fun-filled youth…what activity did you enjoy?
My favorite activities growing up were roller skating, biking, playing a game of hide and seek and jump roping. Basically, I liked being outside. By doing the things I liked, I didn’t realize I was also doing the things my body liked! As an active child, I was building stronger bones and muscles and giving my heart the exercise it needed.
So the next time you encourage your child to exercise, remember to word it in a way that even you find appealing. Key words: Go outside, play and have fun!
For more fun ways to be active here are a few of my favorite links:
How much physical activity do children need?
The CDC recommends three types of physical activity. Aerobic activity, muscle strengthening and bone strengthening. At CDC.com they offer ideas on how to meet each of these fitness goals.
The Kids in Action Booklet available online through the President's Council on Physical Fitness and Sports provides 21 different activities parents can participate in with their kids. Activities are geared towards toddlers building up coordination and strength.
Kidshealth.org offers parents insight into why physical activity is so important.
Familyfun.com offers “Healthy Fun” ideas on their website.
Now get outside and have some fun!
